Calcite (Inventory)

Most speleothems in Guadalupe caves are composed of calcite or aragonite, CaCO₃. These two minerals probably comprise over 95% of all speleothems. In these caves, the carbonate mineralogy is more complex than in most other caves due to the effect of the magnesium ion. This combination makes for a wide variety of speleothem types most of which appear in the calcite section of the inventory form.
