It is sometimes difficult to differentiate between calcite coating, aragonite coating, gypsum coating, and even moonmilk.

Calcite tends to have square-ish crystals. Gypsum sometimes makes starbursts. Aragonite and moonmilk are both bright white.

Correct me if I'm wrong, please. I have heard sometimes you can't tell the difference in the field without destructive testing.
